The higher idle allows more gas in the cylinder, thus reducing backfire from too lean a mixture during throttle back off. A much better remedy is to increase size of pilot and main jet. I went from a 52.5 stock pilot jet to 60 and from a 145 main jet to 165 on my 2000 Savage. However, I have bypassed the airbox with a Uni airfilter directly on the carb (increasing air intake) and I run a Supertrapp with 14 discs and (for racing only) open end cap. My bike runs like a striped assed ape, idles great, never backfires or talks back to me and sounds great. But, I only get about 35-40 miles per gallon.
